Laboratory testing · 2020

In 2020, NOVA reported successful laboratory testing of three coatings for short-term food contact under German, European and US requirements.

Each test answers a different question. The method, test location and scope depend on the material, coating and application.

Substrate hardnessRockwell hardness test: The permanent indentation depth indicates the hardness of the substrate. This does not separately determine the hardness of a thin PVD or DLC coating.
Coating thicknessBall cratering: A ball grinds a small crater into the coated surface. The known ball geometry and the dimensions of the visible rings are used to determine the coating thickness at the test location.
Coating adhesionRockwell indentation test: Cracks and delamination around the test indentation are examined under a microscope. The damage pattern is used for a qualitative assessment of coating adhesion.
SurfaceMicroscopy: Magnification reveals surface features and irregularities. It also supports the evaluation of ball-crater thickness measurements and adhesion tests.
ResultsTest report: The agreed tests and their results are documented. We agree the required scope of testing and documentation with you before the order.
